What Is Echocardiogram All About?

Heart disease is a major cause of death in the United States and comes with various symptoms. The symptoms of heart disease vary depending on the part of the heart that is affected. An individual’s symptoms may also depend on other factors, such as age and gender. The most common symptoms of heart disease include shortness of breath, chest pain (angina), and heart attack. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, at least one person suffers a heart attack or myocardial infarction every 40 seconds. A Port Saint Lucie echocardiogram can help detect heart disease-related symptoms in good time. An echocardiogram ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of your heart.

Here is all you should know about an echocardiogram.

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram test involves using sound to create an image of your heart. It diagnoses and treats problems with your heart or lungs. The echocardiogram can be used in the following ways;

Detecting heart failure: Echocardiogram is a useful tool for detecting heart failure. It can be used to determine whether the left ventricle is filling with blood or if there is too much pressure on the heart’s walls.

Detecting fluid in the heart: The echocardiogram can also detect whether there is too much fluid in your heart, which may indicate an abnormal heart rhythm. An echocardiogram may also show if you have an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia).

Show how surgical and medical treatments are working: Echocardiograms have become an important part of the evaluation of heart disease. This can be done to determine if the heart is working properly and check on heart function after a procedure or surgery.

Check for heart defects early (before symptoms appear): Some people with congenital heart defects may not have any symptoms until later in life, so it’s important to get a baseline test to see how well your heart works before any problems develop. If something is wrong with your heart, it will appear on an echocardiogram.

Who is the right candidate for echocardiogram tests?

Go for an echocardiogram test if you experience the following;

Chest pain

Several things can cause chest pain, but if it is severe enough to cause you to feel unwell, then it could be a sign that you may have a serious heart condition. If this happens, it is worth getting an echocardiogram test so your doctor can investigate further and determine what is causing the chest pain.

Shortness of breath

When you have to take a deep breath, and it feels like there is not enough air in your chest, this could indicate a heart problem. This is because the heart may be pumping too much blood into your lungs. This can cause shortness of breath and coughing up mucus.

Cyanosis

Cyanosis is a condition in which the skin and mucous membranes are bluish. It is caused by the lack of oxygen in the blood and usually occurs when a disease has damaged the heart.
