1. Poor posture

It is right to say that your posture has a massive input on matters of spinal health. One day of operating on poor posture might not harm your low back, but when you make it a habit, it will catch up with you later. A bad posture adds stress and strains the muscles around your back, leading to back pain. For instance, if you become fond of having a continuously bad posture, it begins to change your spine anatomically.

To protect your lower back, pay attention to slumping and hunching. Additionally, ensure your spine is well supported while sitting and stand with your spine straight when lifting heavy objects.

2. Leading a sedentary lifestyle

As most of our work has been transitioned to desk jobs, it’s easier to adopt a sedentary lifestyle. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you should emulate that lifestyle. When you deprive your body of movement for a long time, you restrict blood flow and put excess pressure on the discs in your lower back. This can spell disaster for your lower back health and comfort. To safeguard your spine, take some walk breaks or take a day off work and hike with family and friends.

3. Unhealthy weight

One hard truth is that excessive weight greatly contributes to lower back pain. Generally, a heavier midsection can put you at risk of spinal disc compression, which amplifies pain in your lower back. Furthermore, being overweight can transform your spine posture if ignored.

Nevertheless, a blend of healthy diet and light exercises will be instrumental in cutting the extra pounds for a pain-free life.

4. Being inactive

Although understandably, your day-to-day activities can limit you from consistently being active, you do have to incorporate some activities to stay active. When you deny your body the movement and activity it craves, your lower back muscles become compromised or weaker. To protect your lower back, pay special attention to strengthening your core. A weaker core cannot withstand any unhealthy conditions.

5. Being stressed-up

Generally, when you’re stressed, you tend to tense, which provokes hormonal responses to tighten your low back muscles resulting in pain. In most cases, debilitating back pain can become a negative cycle of tension. Instead of bottling up your thoughts and emotions, find techniques that will stress you out fast for a healthy spine. Activities like meditation or workouts will be effective in putting stress under control.

At McNulty Spine, we understand how chronic low back pain can negatively impact your quality of life, and we offer advanced treatment options for a healthier life. Don’t allow debilitating lower back pain to limit your productivity any longer! Schedule your appointment with Dr McNulty today!
