What Are Twelve-Step Programs?

You’ve probably heard that 12-Step programs may benefit those battling any form of addiction. Meetings for these groups, which are effectively self-help support networks based on the inputs of peers and community members, are held in various locations. In an attempt to carry out the stages of a 12-Step sober living program, participants attend these meetings. Find a 12-Step sponsor who will serve as your mentor as you walk through the 12 steps. A sponsor is a sober somebody who aids in your recovery by coming to your meetings, working the 12 Steps with you, and serving as a role model. Make sure the individual you select is someone you can be yourself with. A “sponsor” is somebody who can keep you accountable for maintaining your sobriety while also listening to you and validating your emotions. But remember that your sponsor is not a therapist, so seek out other support if you feel the need.

Twelve Step Programs.

AA is the most used 12-step programs. Similar 12-step programs, such as Gambler’s Anonymous, have drawn inspiration from this concept. Other 12-Step programs include:

  • Marijuana Anonymous
  • Spenders Anonymous
  • Cocaine Anonymous
  • Crystal Meth Anonymous
  • Narcotics Anonymous
  • Emotions Anonymous
  • Nicotine Anonymous

Everyone may choose the 12-step program that is best for them because of the variety of options available. Every 12-Step program does not necessarily cover the 12 Steps and the 12 Traditions. Some 12-Step groups cater exclusively to those who identify as Christians, youths, Muslims, bisexual, LGBTI, transgender, or asexual people.

Selection Criteria for a Twelve-Step Program

While weighing the advantages and disadvantages of 12-step programs, it’s critical to assess the author’s reliability. Knowing that every 12-step fellowship provides a broad range of meeting styles is reassuring. You can search for sessions that you’ll like, feel accepted, and that will fit into your schedule after choosing a program that works for you. Some groups are explicitly aimed at males or women, individuals who identify as LGBT, or persons who do not wish to smoke, and programs that concentrate on open discussion and reading.
