Discoloration on the ankle and feet might look unsightly, and you would consider it a cosmetic issue, but it might indicate a serious venous condition. The veins transport the blood back to the heart with the help of muscle contraction and valves in the veins, which prevent blood from flowing backward. Thus, ankle discoloration Tinley Park might indicate valve failure of cholesterol deposits on the veins, which impact blood flow from the legs to the heart. However, your vascular doctor will determine whether the discoloration is associated with varicose veins. Here are ways to deal with ankle discoloration.

Avoid Sitting for Extended Time

If you work in a stationary workplace, you will sit for an extended time in your chair. Unfortunately, sitting for an extended time affects blood flow from the lower limbs to the upper body and causes other complications such as chronic back pain. Thus, you would stand and walk frequently or take short breaks as these breaks improve blood circulation. As you walk, the muscles on the legs contract and relax, fostering blood flow in the veins. However, if you cannot take breaks from your desk, you would stretch and tap your legs to promote better circulation.

Elevate the Legs

The office environment might be stationary, and it would be worse if you had a non-ergonomic chair. Therefore, you would lift the legs at the end of the day to promote blood flow from the limbs to the heart. You can use pillows that put the legs above the heart, as the blood will flow naturally through gravity, preventing ankle discoloration.

Exercises

Exercise is ideal for ankle discoloration as it promotes blood flow. During jogging and fast-paced walking, your leg muscles contract and relax, promoting blood flow. Moreover, exercises break down cholesterol deposits in the veins, which may cause ankle and foot discoloration. You might lose the extra weight by engaging in the exercises, as weight might contribute to ankle discoloration.

Use Compression Stockings

Ankle discoloration results from inadequate blood flow in the ankles, and you would use customized stockings to promote blood flow. The compression stockings apply the right pressure on the feet and promote blood flow to the heart. Fortunately, you can wear these stockings at work, reducing the possibility of developing ankle discoloration.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

If the ankle discoloration does not improve with the home remedies, you may opt for minimally invasive procedures which close the affected veins diverting blood to the healthy veins. Your vascular doctor will use imaging X-rays and MRI to identify the affected veins and inject an adhesive fluid that scars the veins. When the scars heal, it blocks the blood from flowing through these veins.

Ankle discoloration might be a cosmetic issue, but it indicates a venous disease that requires medical attention. You may see a venous doctor who determines if the discoloration is associated with venous disease. Venous problems affect blood flow from the limbs to the heart due to failure of the valves on the feet and cholesterol deposits. You can opt for remedies such as exercise, elevating the feet, using compression stockings, and avoiding sitting for an extended time. Finally, minimally invasive procedures that cut the affected veins from the circulatory system would effectively treat ankle discoloration.
